This opportunity is based in Yudanaka, Nagano, a traditional onsen town close to Shiga Kogen, one of Japan’s largest and best-known ski areas. The company provides ski and snowboard lessons, as well as powder, resort and backcountry tours.
The area is particularly appealing in winter, when the surrounding mountains offer excellent skiing and snowboarding. During the warmer months, visitors can enjoy hiking, fishing, local events and the natural beauty of the Japanese Alps.
Tasks & Roles
During the off-season, the accommodation needs regular maintenance and improvements. Helpers can get involved in a range of practical tasks, including painting, cleaning and small building projects such as making storage units and ski racks.
Other jobs include washing floors, windows, sheets and blankets, as well as carrying out general repairs. Depending on their skills and interests, helpers may also assist with basic plumbing and electrical work.
There is plenty of flexibility around the work. Helpers can choose the tasks they would like to take on and work with others to arrange suitable times for both work and free time.
Living & Getting There
Helpers stay in the company’s accommodation, which offers both private and shared rooms, shared bathrooms and access to a fully equipped kitchen. The property is in a peaceful neighbourhood with a river running through the area and mountain views in every direction.
Yudanaka Station is the main transport point for reaching the area. From elsewhere in Japan, the village can be reached by local train, bus or car. The nearest major international airport is Narita International Airport (NRT).
What else
Yudanaka is surrounded by mountains and lies close to Jōshin’etsu Kōgen National Park, a UNESCO-listed area known for its rich natural environment. Wildlife can be seen in the surrounding mountains, while autumn brings particularly impressive colours to the landscape.
The arrangement is designed to be flexible, allowing helpers to decide how much they would like to work and how long they would like to stay. It offers a chance to experience life in a traditional Japanese mountain town while enjoying plenty of time to explore the surrounding area.
