This opportunity invites those looking to Volunteer in Tibet to take part in a meaningful English teaching and cultural exchange experience in Litang, Sichuan, China, high in the Eastern Himalaya. Volunteers support young adult Tibetan learners through online English lessons and the creation of simple, engaging educational videos. Litang is known for its high-altitude landscapes, open grasslands and strong nomadic heritage, alongside monasteries, temples and everyday life shaped by Tibetan, Chinese and Buddhist traditions.
Volunteer in Tibet: Tasks & Roles
Those who choose to volunteer in Tibet through this programme will teach English online for around three hours a day, five days a week, primarily during evening hours. In addition, time is set aside to collaborate on instructional video content, bringing the total weekly commitment to approximately 25 hours. Creativity is welcomed, and experience with filming or video editing is considered a valuable asset. Volunteers must be at least 18 years old, be native speakers of General American or Canadian English, and be able to live comfortably at an altitude of around 4,000 metres. The role is well suited to digital nomads and to individuals who enjoy sharing language, culture and personal perspectives.
Volunteer in Tibet: Living & Getting There
Accommodation is provided in a traditional Tibetan home located in a peaceful area on the outskirts of Litang. Volunteers have a private, lockable room with views of the surrounding mountains and clear night skies. A shared kitchen is available, while bathroom facilities are located in a separate building across the yard in a traditional Asian-style format. Three home-cooked Tibetan meals are served each day, and the town also offers a range of restaurants and cafés. Litang, with a population of around 30,000, is compact and walkable, with taxis, buses and electric bicycles readily available. Travel typically involves flying into Chengdu, via Shuangliu or Tianfu International Airport, followed by a bus journey to Litang, where volunteers are met on arrival.
Volunteer in Tibet: What else
To volunteer in Tibet is also to take part in daily cultural exchange. Local Tibetan and Chinese residents are keen to practise English and learn about American culture, while openly sharing their own traditions and way of life. The area hosts seasonal festivals, religious gatherings, horse races and community celebrations, and guided trips can be arranged to remote landscapes and natural hot springs. Depending on the time of year and length of stay, volunteers may meet nomadic families and gain insight into herding traditions that have continued for generations. The experience is personal, immersive and welcoming, and previous volunteers are available to share their experiences. A video call can be arranged in advance to discuss expectations and answer any questions.
