Care for cats and dogs as a volunteer in Bali – requirements & tasks
We’re the only organization on the island of Nusa Penida, Bali, Indonesia, dedicated to helping dogs and cats. We run a sterilization program and provide emergency medical care. We urgently need volunteers to help with daily chores so our staff can focus on the animals. Please consider donating some of your time to this vital cause!
It’s important to us that you can truly commit to your time here. Short-notice cancellations and early departures put us in a difficult position, so please plan your trip carefully! Consider adding a few extra days before and/or after your volunteering period for travel and sightseeing, so you won’t need to change your dates once you’re here. Additionally, if you’re flying directly from places like Europe or the US, remember you might need some rest before starting.
We prioritize those who can commit to a minimum of 2-3 months and who are 25 years or older, though this can depend on your motivation, work experience, and our current needs.
Here are some other things we look for in our volunteers:
- Good English: You’ll need to be able to communicate effectively with our team.
- Southeast Asia experience: Previous experience in this region is a plus, as you’ll have a better understanding of the culture and environment.
- Common sense: This is essential for working with animals and in a dynamic environment.
- Independent and adaptable: You should be comfortable working unsupervised and be able to adjust to new situations.
- Team player: We’re a small team and rely on each other to get things done.
You will work for about 24 hours per week.
Typical tasks
You’ll work one 3.5-hour shift per day, alternating between mornings (7:30 AM – 11:00 AM) and afternoons (2:00 PM – 5:30 PM). The schedule can be a bit tiring at first, but you’ll adjust quickly!
Your daily tasks will include:
- Cleaning: General cleaning tasks like sweeping, mopping, tidying, laundry, washing dishes and bowls, and of course, scooping up poo.
- Food preparation: We provide our dogs with fresh food (including fish and meat), so there’s quite a bit of cooking involved.
- Feeding: Making sure all the dogs and cats are fed and have fresh water.
- Socialization: Spending quality time with the animals (once your other tasks are complete).
- Health monitoring: Keeping an eye on the health of our dogs and cats and reporting any concerns.
- Grocery shopping: Helping with grocery runs for the animals.
Other responsibilities:
- You may be asked to help with other tasks as needed, such as managing social media, making minor repairs, or gardening.
- You’ll have one day off on the weekend, either Saturday or Sunday, rotated with other volunteers.
Care for cats and dogs as a volunteer in Bali – what we offer
You’ll be living in a comfortable log cabin, sharing your space with other volunteers. It’s a basic setup, but it has everything you need, including a shared bathroom, kitchen (with a hob and fridge), and living area. We encourage you to embrace the local lifestyle and be a part of the community. To ensure a pleasant living environment for everyone, we ask that you participate in keeping the communal areas clean and tidy.
Important notes:
- Curfew: We have a 9 PM curfew out of respect for our neighbors. If you plan to stay out late, you’ll need to arrange alternative accommodation for the night.
- Upgrades: If you’d prefer a more private or Western-style accommodation, you’re welcome to arrange this yourself (just let us know beforehand).
- Laundry: There are laundry services available in the local village for a small fee.
- Long-term stays: Volunteers who stay for longer periods or have valuable skills may have the opportunity to upgrade to a private room with an ensuite bathroom.
You’ll be responsible for your own meals. You can use the kitchen to cook for yourself, and there are also many inexpensive local restaurants to explore.
We provide drinking water at the sanctuary during your working hours.
