Conservation and Farming in Drake Bay, Costa Rica

Conservation and Farming in Drake Bay (Costa Rica)

Victor coordinates a family-run conservation and agricultural project established in 2010 on an approximately eight-hectare farm in Progreso de Drake, on Costa Rica’s Osa Peninsula. The project combines sustainable farming, environmental conservation and community activities, offering helpers the chance to learn new skills while experiencing local life in a beautiful natural setting.

The property is just a 10-minute walk from the beach and close to Corcovado National Park and Caño Island. The area is known for its rich wildlife, tropical surroundings and beautiful beaches, making it an ideal place for those who enjoy nature and outdoor activities.

Tasks & Roles

Helpers can get involved in a range of activities, including reforestation, gardening, greenhouse work, agriculture, construction, cooking and beach or community clean-ups. There are also opportunities to assist with animal care, sea turtle conservation and English lessons for children at local schools.

Activities usually begin after breakfast and last around three to four hours each morning. No previous experience is required, as the team is happy to teach new skills. The project welcomes people who are willing to learn, contribute to the community and enjoy meeting others.

Living & Getting There

Helpers pay a contribution of $25 per person per day. This helps cover essential project supplies and supports the provision of simple daily meals for people on low incomes. In return, three meals a day are provided, with vegetarian options available.

Accommodation is in basic but clean shared rooms with four beds. Facilities include bedding, shared bathrooms and showers, bath towels, electricity, reliable Wi-Fi and a space to wash clothes. Some free tours are also available, while additional activities can be arranged at an extra cost.

The nearest major international airport is Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) in San José. From there, helpers can take a domestic flight to Drake Bay Airport, where a team member will arrange a taxi transfer to the project.

Alternatively, they can stay overnight in San José and take the daily 8.30 am Tracopa bus to Sierpe de Osa, which costs approximately ₡7,000. From Sierpe, a boat to Drake Bay costs around $20, followed by a taxi transfer costing approximately $25. A team member will welcome new arrivals and show them around the property.

What else

There is plenty to enjoy outside the daily activities. Helpers can go hiking, play volleyball or football, surf, fish, dive, snorkel or take horse-riding and ATV tours. The nearby national park and Caño Island offer further opportunities to explore the region’s natural beauty. Volleyball is played on the beach three days a week, while surfing and fishing are popular during the rainy season.

Helpers should bring mosquito repellent, sunscreen and rubber boots or other closed-toe shoes suitable for outdoor work.
