This volunteering opportunity in Cambodia offers a unique chance to make a meaningful impact by supporting free education and essential life skills for children in need. Located in a warm, rural village, the school is led by a passionate team of three local educators who teach English, Chinese, and computer skills to underprivileged children. Volunteers are invited to become part of a close-knit community where authentic Cambodian culture is part of daily life, and every contribution supports a brighter future for local students.
Volunteering Opportunity in Cambodia: Tasks & Roles
Those taking part in this volunteering opportunity in Cambodia can contribute both in and out of the classroom. Within the school, volunteers assist with English language lessons by helping students improve pronunciation, introducing different accents, and encouraging natural conversations. This supportive engagement helps children build confidence and fluency in a friendly environment.
Outside the classroom, volunteers are encouraged to get involved in hands-on gardening activities. From watering and weeding to tending fruit, vegetables, flowers, and poultry, this is a chance to connect with the land while contributing to the sustainability of the school community. Those with skills in Chinese or computers may also find opportunities to assist in those subjects, depending on the current needs of the students and teaching team.
Volunteering Opportunity in Cambodia: Living & Getting There
This volunteering opportunity in Cambodia includes accommodation in four simple but comfortable private rooms, each with bedding, a mosquito net, and basic essentials. If more than four volunteers are present, rooms may be shared, though each individual will always have their own mattress. The facilities include an outdoor toilet and a refreshing cold-water shower, ideal for the region’s warm climate.
Volunteers are provided with two daily meals—lunch and dinner—prepared with fresh, local ingredients and shared with the host family. Meals typically include traditional Cambodian fare such as rice, vegetables, and protein. Breakfast is not included, but low-cost snacks are easily available at the local market. Drinking water is accessible from the on-site tank, or bottled water can be purchased nearby.
Reaching the project site is straightforward. The school is based in Prey Sbat village, Trapeang Thum Khang Cheung commune, Tram Kak district in Takeo Province, approximately 80 kilometres from Phnom Penh. A direct minivan departs Phnom Penh daily at noon, taking about three hours and costing $7.50. Although the driver may not speak English, a local Tuk Tuk or PassApp driver can assist with arrangements. The minivan drivers are known personally by the host and will ensure volunteers arrive safely and comfortably.
Alternative routes are available for those travelling from Kampot or Sihanoukville, and further guidance is available upon request.
Volunteering Opportunity in Cambodia: What Else
What makes this volunteering opportunity in Cambodia truly special is its combination of education, sustainability, and cultural exchange. The project includes an active eco-farming element, where volunteers learn about composting, organic gardening, and small-scale livestock care. Daily tasks may include planting, harvesting, feeding animals, and maintaining the farm using natural methods. These skills are taught alongside a deeper understanding of how sustainable agriculture supports the school’s broader educational goals.
Volunteers become part of a warm and supportive community, working closely with three local teachers—Linna, Leakhana, and Shoceat Tra—who are known for their kindness and guidance. Mike, the school’s dedicated gardener, is also on hand to assist volunteers in their outdoor tasks.
To ensure a safe and respectful environment, all volunteers must provide a recent police or background check before joining the programme. Those who do not already have one should apply before travelling.
This is more than just a volunteering opportunity in Cambodia—it is a chance to experience real village life, develop new skills, and make a genuine difference. Volunteers are welcomed as family and often leave with unforgettable memories, lasting friendships, and the knowledge that their help truly mattered.
