About Free Volunteering

The first edition of Free Volunteering (.co.uk) was launched in February 2011. It was a basic HTML website built using Google Sites, providing links to free and low-cost volunteering opportunities around the world.

The site was created by Darren Murphy, a business graduate and traveller. The idea emerged after he struggled to find free volunteering opportunities abroad online. However, during his travels in 2009/10, he volunteered with the disaster response organisation All Hands in Indonesia. The experience inspired him to create a platform that would help other prospective volunteers access similar opportunities.

In 2015, HelpStay Ltd acquired the Free Volunteering site. Under HelpStay’s stewardship, the spirit of the original platform endures, enabling travellers to explore the world while making a positive impact. Today, the site features a curated selection of the latest volunteering opportunities from the HelpStay platform.
