Volunteer in Dominica: Help on a Jungle Farm

Join Us in Renovating a Caribbean Farmstead (Dominica)

This is an opportunity to volunteer in Dominica, staying on a small farm nestled in a lush valley between the mountains, locally known as Zion. Volunteers are invited to stay for a minimum of two weeks and contribute around twenty hours of help each week. The land is alive with fruit trees such as citrus, banana, guava, papaya and cocoa, and is shared with two dogs, two cats, a rapidly expanding rabbitry, quail, chickens and a small fish pond. It is a peaceful and deeply natural environment, ideal for anyone looking to live simply, learn by doing and enjoy life surrounded by greenery.

Volunteer in Dominica: Tasks & Roles

Help is mainly needed with ongoing renovations and general upkeep of the house. This may include painting, woodwork, tidying, organising and cleaning. The garden and animal areas also require regular attention, although a local helper visits weekly to handle heavier tasks. As renovation work progresses, there is also a need to refresh guest rooms, clean ceilings and assist in building furniture from locally sourced wood. Tools are available to use according to each person’s skills and experience, and tasks can be adapted to suit your practical strengths. The focus is on working steadily, sharing knowledge and contributing to a meaningful project at a relaxed pace.

Volunteer in Dominica: Living & Getting There

Volunteers have their own bedroom with a private bathroom, along with Wi-Fi access. The lifestyle is calm and unhurried. The main road is about a 25-minute walk away, where you can catch buses to the town or the coast, and there is also a car available when needed. Dominica is an island known for natural beauty, waterfalls, hot springs, hiking trails, diving and whale watching, so there is plenty to explore during your free time. Meals are prepared using local produce, including fruit from the garden, and anything extra can be brought back from town. The closest airport is Douglas-Charles (DOM), and travellers from Europe often find it more economical to fly via Paris to Martinique (FDF) or Guadeloupe (PTP) and then take the Express des Îles ferry to Dominica.

Volunteer in Dominica: What Else

This experience is well-suited to volunteers who enjoy being outdoors, are comfortable with hands-on tasks and appreciate a slower pace of living close to nature. Due to the nature of the environment and the ongoing work, it is not possible to host additional animals, small children, vegans or individuals with physical limitations that would make daily tasks difficult. Above all, this is a place for good conversation, shared meals and creating a warm, cooperative atmosphere. If you would like to volunteer in Dominica, contribute around twenty hours of help each week and stay for at least two weeks (or longer), you are warmly encouraged to get in touch.

Accommodation for Before and After Your Stay

Your trip may not be all about a work exchange – you might want to spend some time exploring the country. You may need to book accommodation either before you arrive on site with your host, or after your stay with them ends.
