Volunteer at an Observatory in Corsica through the unique Stelle Nostre project, where astronomy, nature, and cultural exchange come together beneath some of the island’s clearest night skies. This experience offers an alternative way to discover Corsica while sharing meaningful moments with fellow stargazers, travellers, and astronomy enthusiasts in a peaceful natural setting.
Based in the mountain village of Erbajolo, Stelle Nostre is creating a welcoming cultural space dedicated to astronomy, learning, and human connection. Throughout the year, invited astronomers and enthusiasts lead observation evenings, workshops, and educational activities designed to encourage discovery in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. The project promotes a simple lifestyle close to nature, where shared experiences and authentic connections remain at the heart of daily life.
Volunteer at an Observatory: Tasks & Roles
Those who volunteer at an observatory with Stelle Nostre are invited to take part in light daily activities for around two to three hours each day, depending on ongoing projects. Some days may also remain entirely free, allowing participants time to rest or explore the surrounding area.
Daily involvement may include preparing accommodation spaces for astronomy facilitators and visitors, helping maintain communal areas, and supporting the smooth running of life on site. All tasks are approached through cooperation and shared living, encouraging a respectful and welcoming atmosphere for everyone involved.
The project is also developing several community initiatives, including a permaculture garden, new accommodation spaces, astronomy-related activities, and creative improvement projects designed to strengthen the cultural and communal spirit of Stelle Nostre. No previous experience is required, only enthusiasm, curiosity, and a willingness to participate.
Volunteer at an Observatory: Living & Getting There
Participants are accommodated either in a private studio or a comfortable single room, depending on availability, ensuring a relaxed environment with privacy and comfort. Life on site combines peaceful surroundings with opportunities to learn more about astronomy through guided observation evenings and activities led by passionate facilitators.
There is plenty of free time to discover Corsica beyond the project itself, whether exploring forests and hiking trails, visiting nearby villages, or enjoying day trips to the coast. Excursions to natural and cultural sites may also be organised to provide a deeper understanding of the island and its traditions.
Erbajolo is a tranquil village in central Corsica surrounded by mountains, lakes, and forests, offering exceptionally dark skies that make it an ideal location for astronomy and night sky observation. The nearest airport is Bastia – Poretta Airport, and transport can be arranged from airports, ports, or train stations across Corsica directly to Stelle Nostre.
Volunteer at an Observatory: What else
Choosing to volunteer at an observatory with Stelle Nostre provides far more than an astronomy experience. It is an opportunity to discover Corsican culture, meet people from different backgrounds, and enjoy a lifestyle centred on nature, learning, and shared moments beneath the stars.
The project welcomes individuals who are open-minded, respectful, and comfortable living in a calm rural environment. It is particularly suited to those with an interest in astronomy, culture, or nature, as well as anyone motivated by genuine cultural exchange and community living. Above all, Stelle Nostre values authenticity, mutual learning, and the experience of discovering Corsica in a meaningful and memorable way.
