Try volunteering in Mexico – requirements & tasks
This project started with a simple desire to connect with travelers and share experiences. Our passionate staff love making every moment memorable for our guests. We’re also committed to providing comfort and quality, because we believe they’re essential to any great trip.
While we’re a relatively new hostel, we’ve already created incredible memories and built lasting friendships with our guests. Some have stayed with us for over 50 days or returned to visit multiple times throughout the year! We’re excited to continue growing and offering amazing experiences to travelers from around the world.
About the location
Located in the heart of San Cristóbal de las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico, our hostel is just steps away from the vibrant cultural center of this magical village.
San Cristóbal de las Casas is a popular tourist destination in Mexico. It offers a mix of cultural and outdoor activities. You can visit museums, churches, markets, and restaurants. The city hosts many events throughout the year, including festivals and live music.
Visitors can learn about the local culture in nearby villages, or explore natural attractions like Cañón del Sumidero, Cascada El Chiflón, and Lagos de Montebello. The archaeological sites of Toniná and Palenque are also easily accessible.
Our charming hostel, housed in a beautifully restored neoclassical building, is only two blocks from the main square. Relax in our tranquil garden, unwind in a hammock, or soak in the breathtaking 360-degree views of the city from our brand-new terrace.
Venture beyond the city to discover the fascinating cultural villages of San Juan Chamula & Zinacantán, just 20 minutes away. Immerse yourself in the natural wonders of the region, including stunning waterfalls, pristine lakes, and captivating archaeological sites like Lagos de Montebello, Cascada El Chiflón, Toniná, Cascadas de Agua Azul, and Palenque, all within a 2-3 hour journey.
Responsibilities
We’ve designed our volunteer shifts to provide the best possible support for our guests. We typically host between 6 and 9 volunteers at a time, with each volunteer working a mix of morning, evening, and night shifts on different days.
A staff member will always be available to supervise activities and guide volunteers through their tasks. Volunteer roles are assigned upon arrival, based on the hostel’s needs at that time.
Here’s a glimpse of the volunteer activities:
- Kitchen Help, Cleaning, and Reception Assistance: (5 days per week) Help the cook serve breakfast, assist with cleaning rooms, and support receptionists by welcoming new guests and providing hostel information.
- Cooking Dinner: (5 evenings per week) Assist the cook with preparing the grill and serving dinner.
- Bar Assistance: (5 evenings per week) Help the bartender serve drinks, prepare cocktails, play music, and create a fun and lively atmosphere in our hostel bar.
- Night Shift at Reception: (3 nights per week) Assist at the front desk with late check-ins, check-outs, and tour departures.
You’ll work for about 27 hours per week.
