Animal Welfare Project in Mayreau | Volunteer Abroad

Volunteer with an Animal Welfare Project (Caribbean)

The Animal Welfare Project in Mayreau is a non-profit initiative dedicated to improving the lives of neglected, abandoned, and mistreated animals on the small Caribbean island of Mayreau in St Vincent & the Grenadines. Supported by a small team of committed volunteers, the project works to protect and care for dogs, cats, goats, sheep, and wildlife in need while encouraging responsible animal ownership across the local community.

The project rescues and rehabilitates vulnerable animals, provides essential veterinary care and medication, and delivers preventative treatments such as parasite control. It also promotes the sterilisation of dogs and cats by helping local owners access these services. Through practical action, education, and community engagement, the Animal Welfare Project in Mayreau aims to create lasting improvements in animal welfare across the island.

Animal Welfare Project in Mayreau: Tasks & Roles

Volunteers are an important part of the Animal Welfare Project in Mayreau, helping with the daily care of rescue animals and supporting those living within the local community. Duties include feeding, exercising, monitoring health, assisting with general animal care, and helping to look after around 80 island dogs, as well as cats, goats, sheep, and any other animals requiring assistance.

Many local dogs spend much of their lives tethered, and with their owners’ permission, volunteers take them for regular walks, providing valuable exercise and social interaction. Every day brings different challenges, so volunteers should be adaptable, proactive, and happy to help wherever they are needed.

The project welcomes people with a genuine passion for animal welfare who are willing to make a meaningful contribution. Experience in veterinary medicine, veterinary nursing, or animal welfare is beneficial but not essential. Volunteers should be reliable, motivated, diplomatic, physically fit, and comfortable living simply in a warm tropical environment. As Mayreau is a hilly island, a reasonable level of fitness is required.
