Sadhana Forest is a volunteer organization focused on creating long-term plant-based food security through environmental restoration. Join us to help Mother Nature!
Volunteer in India & work in forestry – requirements & tasks
Our main project is the reforestation of 70 acres of severely eroded land. We are working to recreate the Tropical Dry Evergreen Forest indigenous to our area. This forest type is found only in Southern India and Sri Lanka and provides a rare biological richness due to its very high species abundance (over 1000 species of trees, shrubbery and liana).
Reforestation and water conservation are two ways we practice our compassion for nature but in the past years, we have added new ways.
We welcome and accept everyone who wishes to work with us at any time of year and we always have plenty of space available and plenty of work to do! You do not need to have a background in forestry or water conservation.
We engage in seva (selfless service) for 30-35 hours a week. Our seva primarily consists of reforestation and water conservation as well as general tasks that sustain the project as a whole.
The reforestation seva consists of preparing mounds for tree planting, planting trees, watering and mulching young trees and caring for trees in our tree nursery. The water conservation seva consists of building and repairing bunds, swales, trenches, and gabions.
The general tasks include preparing meals in the kitchen, cleaning up after meals, composting food waste, managing the tool shed, organizing and repairing tools, inspecting huts for bee and termite damage, maintaining solar panels, maintaining dry compost toilets, and sorting community waste.
Community members should not smoke cigarettes, use drugs, or drink alcohol during their entire stay.
Volunteer in India & work in forestry – what we offer
We provide our helpers with accommodation in a shared dormitory in the volunteer’s house. Also, a full board is included.
We practice an eco-friendly way of life including veganism, alternative construction, solar energy, biodegradable toiletries, recycling, food composting, riding bicycles, compost toilets, and purchasing local, organic foods whenever possible.
Sadhana Forest offers very basic accommodation in huts in the forest, with shared bathrooms and three vegan meals per day for volunteers.
At Sadhana Forest we eat a wholefood plant-based diet, which means no animal products from living or deceased animals. We eat fruits, vegetables, rice, millet, beans, and dal.
