Help with permaculture while volunteering in England – requirements & tasks

The Bearas is our family home nestled in the centre of Dartmoor, Devon, in a small hamlet called Hexworthy. We live in a humble wooden cabin on the valley, with another small outhouse, we are slowly developing. Our land consists of 6 acres of rugged moorland, a small woodland and biodiverse marshland stretching down to the West Dart River. We also own two other plots of land on Dartmoor, one that currently has our pet sheep but we are looking at getting some more livestock, and the other we are in the process of building an agricultural building with the hope to develop it into a market garden.

In the future we hope The Bearas will become a space that is open to all areas of society, for holiday rentals, education, creative pursuits and wellness retreats; but for now, we are in the initial stages of developing and our main goal is to fix up the buildings and work on the land. We are focusing on controlling the invasive species taking over Dartmoor such as Himalayan balsam and bracken that are threatening the biodiversity as well as managing the woodland.

We are a family of five consisting of me (Ali), my mum Lindsey and my three younger siblings Zakira, Elijah and Torin. My mum owns a residential home in the local village, my sister Zakira is a ceramist, my brother Elijah is a self-taught carpenter and currently studying business and my youngest sibling Torin is helping out working on the land. I currently work for the social justice department of Dartington Trust for a national wide charity called Research in Practice. We also have two dogs Juniper a lurcher and a small terrier Piper.

We are particularly looking for individuals interested in regenerative agriculture and permaculture who are skilled carpenters, foresters and growers but anyone welcome who would like to spend some time in one of the most beautiful (and sunny) parts of the UK.

You will work for about 20 hours per week.
